AUSTIN, Texas – Jennies Basketball senior
Shelby Winkelmann has been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) as the 2015-16 Division II Academic All-America of the Year.
Winkelmann, a native of Rhineland, Mo., becomes just the fifth-ever student-athlete at Central Missouri to be named an Academic All-America of the Year, and first for Jennies Basketball. She is also just the seventh Jennies basketball player to receive the Academic All-American honor.
An Academic All-District selection in 2014-15, Winkelmann graduated this past December with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in Speech Pathology. She is pursuing her Master's Degree in the same field at UCM and still holds a 4.0 GPA.
Winkelmann continues to add to her growing list of accolades at UCM. Earlier this week, she was named All-MIAA First Team for the second straight year, just the seventh Jennies to ever accomplish that.
On the court, Winkelmann leads the Jennies and is second in the MIAA and 19
th in the nation, scoring 19.8 points per game. She's also shooting a career-best 49.1% from the field this season. She has scored 20 or more points in 13 games this season, twice scoring a season-high 29 against Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern.
Winkelmann does more than just score, as she also leads the team with 83 assists. She's averaging 4.4 rebounds per game and has come away with 42 steals.
Winkelmann became the 25
th Jennie to reach the 1,000 point milestone Dec. 19 against Nebraska-Kearney. She has continued to move up in the scoring ranks and currently sits 13
th with 1,374 career points.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-American awards, student-athletes must be a sophomore or higher and in at least their second year at their current institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30. Honorees are chosen based on both their academic and athletic achievements.
